On January 26th, 2018, the Illinois Academy of Audiology hosted its 25th state convention in Normal, Illinois.   As an organization that has traditionally held our state conference in the wonderful city of Chicago, this year’s conference location in Normal was an exciting change for the ILAA, encouraging participation from all of our hardworking Audiologists in central and southern Illinois, as well as the surrounding states of Iowa, Missouri, and Indiana.  The sold-out convention consisted of a group of 100 Audiologists and student members who traveled from across the state to attend the convention.

The 2018 convention kicked off on Thursday, January 25th with an exciting performance by the Illinois-native Cochlear Microphonics band.  The night of entertainment provided an opportunity for Audiologists from across the region to come together to bond and catch up on all of the exciting changes in Illinois.  On Friday, January 26th, the jam-packed one-day convention kicked off with a stellar presentation by Brian Taylor, Ph.D.   He provided a riveting talk on the rationale behind patient-centered care and its benefits for use in the hearing aid decision process.   Kimberly Cavitt, Au.D. followed up with an informative presentation on how Audiologists can practice to their full scope, particularly in regard to the 2018 Speech Pathology and Audiology Practice Act which went into effect on January 1, 2018.  Sumitrajit Dhar, Ph.D. delved into the application of new clinical tools to address the increasing demand for audiology services and treatment options.  Finally, Antony Joseph, Ph.D. concluded the convention with an in-depth discussion about how excessive exposure to hazardous occupational noise can lead to auditory injury, such as hearing loss and tinnitus.

On behalf of the Illinois Academy of Audiology, a big thanks to all who participated in our 2018 ILAA Silver Symposium in Normal, IL!  The wild success of our convention this year reiterated the wonderful support we have from the professionals in our state, ensuring the success of our organization for future years to come.  The Illinois Academy of Audiology would also like to thank this year’s sponsors for their generous support of our convention and the continued support of our organization as a whole.   This support by our members and sponsors allows the ILAA to continue our mission to educate members and advocate for our profession in this state.
